layers of ceramic coating

Although it may seem like a sacrificial layer of glass, ceramic coatings actually amplify everything under it. For example, a ceramic coating that is applied to matte paint will maintain the matte finish. On the other hand, a coating that sits on perfectly polished paint will amplify the gloss.

In order for gloss to exist, there needs to be a decent amount of clearcoat left on the surface. Clearcoat is the final layer of paint that is meant to give a glossy finish while also protecting the base coat of paint which gives the vehicle its actual color. Beneath the basecoat is primer and bare metal.

the science behind ceramic coating

So what eats through clear coat? Almost any foreign contaminants can eat through clearcoat because of how soft and sensitive it is. This includes bird droppings, hard waterspot, tree sap, salt water, etc.

So how do we protect the clearcoat? Any form of paint protection can reduce the risk of damaging your vehicle’s clearcoat. This includes wax, synthetic sealants, and of course, ceramic coatings! Whatever method you choose, it is important to add a sacrificial layer of protection to prolong the life of the paint.

But where does the gloss come from? The amount of gloss that you see when a coating is applied, is due to the amount of preparation done before installation. On a typical coating job for us, about 90% of our time is spent on just the prep alone!

When a coating is applied, it amplifies whatever is underneath it. So a glossy car will give off more gloss and a swirled car will appear to be more swirled. Preparation includes proper decontamination of the paint and many hours of machine polishing to give the clearcoat a smooth surface for the coating to sit on.

So why can't I put a ceramic coating onto faded paint? If you paint looks faded, it could either mean that there is oxidation building up on the surface or there isn't any clearcoat left. Oxidation can be removed with enough machine polishing and in some cases, wet sanding. However, the non-existance of clear would result in having to repaint the vehicle.

Moral of the story: Protect your paint as soon as possible! Your vehicle has the most clearcoat once it leaves the factory. The clock is ticking the second it leaves the facility on its way to the dealership. The longer you wait, the more prone your paint is to diminishing and eventually fading. Don't wait until its too late!
