This is a very difficult topic to talk about because it always depends on the source of the odor and what exactly is making your vehicle's interior dirty. If you're someone who eats dry food in your car then it usually is a simple cleanup. But if you have mold growing or odors caused from pets, there's a bit more that needs to be done.

The average car that comes to us for an interior detail is typically a result of daily use. This typically includes sand, dirt, and even a few food crumbs here and there. In this case, a good vacuum and spot cleaning with an All Purpose Cleaner (APC) is good enough to get the interior looking good.

Very rarely, we will receive a vehicle with a bit more than your average mess. This includes mold, mildew, smoking ash, pet hair, pet odors, and unfortunately, bodily fluids. On top of the high price tag, these jobs require more than a good scrub.

The first step we take is cleaning up what is visual. This includes a thorough vacuum, steam cleaning, and scrubbing down the interior with an APC. We would then follow up with a hot water extraction on any fabrics or upholstery also known as "shampooing". This takes care of any contamination under the surface that we can't see and in most cases, takes care of any existing odors.

the science behind auto detailing

Most people would stop after shampooing the interior but this is only a short term solution. Any odor caused by bacterial contamination will resurface over time unless you kill it at the source. The most important part of any odor elimination is following up with a product that contains ENZYME KILLERS.

So what are enzymes? To save all the scientific talk, enzymes are proteins that act as biological catalysts. Which means that even though you eliminate odors the first time, they will eventually return unless you kill the enzymes that cause the odors to resurface.

To do this, we either use a dedicated enzyme killing product or a smoke machine that contains enzyme killers. This will penetrate the entire interior of the vehicle and completely sanitize it to kill any bacteria or enzymes at the source.

Since most people don't have access to professional grade enzyme killers, a good alternative is any pet odor eliminator that can be purchased from any big box store. Simply mist the product throughout the vehicle's interior and work it in with a towel. In most cases, this will be sufficient enough to kill any enzymes and you're all set!
