MYTH 10 : I can get rid of water spots with wax.

Let me start off by saying I’ve never done a waterspot removal using wax at any point of my career. I’ve done basic washes where fresh water spots have wiped right off but hard water spots require a different approach.

If your vehicle has been hit with fresh sprinkler water or rain it is recommended that you wipe it off ASAP with a quick detail spray or waterless wash. If you catch it early enough, you have nothing to worry about.
On the other hand, hard water that has been left on the surface will dry over time. The calcium and mineral deposits will create that familiar ring or spotting and eventually embed its way into the surface. The longer you wait, the more difficult it will be to remove. This is also why we recommend not washing your vehicle in direct sunlight or when the paint is hot.

My recommended method for waterspot removal would be to use a rubbing compound or fine-cut polish. I personally use a machine polisher but with a microfiber towel, some elbow grease, and patience, you can get the job done. This will also leave a nice, glossy finish to your paint.
A more aggressive method would be to use an acid-based chemical or designated waterspot remover. The acid will break down the minerals and reduce the spotting. While this method is effective, it is also risky if you don’t know what you’re doing. Misuse of these products can lead to permanent damage such as acid burn, rust, oxidation, and skin damage.

If your windows have waterspots, you can definitely use these methods as long as it’s not on the front windshield! Windshields are extremely sensitive and have little room for error because of the softer glass used. Our recommended method for glass is a dedicated glass polish.
Whichever method you choose, be sure to finish by protecting the treated surface. If you are in need of professional help to remove your water spots, reach out to your local detailer and if possible, have them inspect the water spots before getting an estimate. Sometimes it can be as easy as a quick wash but other times, it would need to be sanded off and machine polished.
Moral of the story : Take care of water spots before it’s too late!
