MYTH 9 : It’s safe to use water as washer fluid.

Look, I get it. You need to wipe that bird poop off your windshield and water is the easiest way to fill up that washer fluid tank. But it may be causing more damage to your vehicle than you think.

One reason that using plain water as your wiper fluid can damage your vehicle is water spotting. Tap water tends to contain minerals that create that familiar spotting once it dries. If left unattended and baking in the sun, water spots can be very difficult to remove.

I‘ve seen some people even use distilled or purified water to prevent spotting. While it is less likely that water spotting can occur, water tends to be a bad lubricant. You may experience wiper chatter and squeaking that will eventually reduce the life of your wipers. The lack of lubrication can also cause scratches on the glass over time. I have 2 recommendations that will keep your windshield clean and prolong the life of your wiper blades. The first option is to buy a dedicated washer fluid that contains detergents and protective properties.

My favorite type of washer fluid is made by Rain X. Specifically their green bug remover (https://amzn.to/4qCUymy). When sprayed onto the windshield, the wipers have sufficient lubrication to glide along the glass while also leaving a protective layer that repels water, bugs, and makes short work of bird poop.

uncoated windshield needs ceramic coating for better visibility

My second recommendation would be to ceramic coat your vehicle’s glass. A good ceramic coating is a good way to ensure maximum and long-lasting protection against the elements. It also has incredible water beading behavior that causes water to fly off the glass with ease. While it is the more expensive option, it is the most beneficial!
