A common request from our customers is that they want to make their windows darker but want to save some money by skipping the removal process and adding film on top of existing film. However, this is not always the best approach.

Let’s start with cleanliness. If we were to stack window tint, we would not be able to properly prep the surface before installing the new film because we would risk scratching the underlying layer of film. On top of that, without proper cleaning, it is likely that excessive amounts of dirt would remain in the film.

As we’ve discussed before, window film needs UV exposure in order to properly cure. Without it, any remaining moisture bubbles will dry out and remain visible. By stacking a film on top of another film that was meant to filter 99% of UV rays, it is likely that the tint will have residual bubbles.

In addition to not fully cure, stacking window film immediately voids any warranty regardless of the brand of film and the installer. It is considered misuse of the product as well as unsafe and in some cases, illegal.
