MYTH 8 : Ceramic wax is the same as ceramic coating.

This has been a constant debate in the detailing world. The short answer: no. A ceramic wax is NOT the same as a true ceramic coating. But we’re not here for short answers.
First, let’s understand what “ceramic” is. Ceramic-based products contain a chemical known as silica dioxide (SiO2) which is essentially the “pre-form” of things such as quartz, sand, glass, etc. When it dries and turns solid, it becomes a hard glass-like material.

The main difference between a ceramic wax and a true ceramic coating has to do with the amount and/or concentration of SiO2. While a ceramic wax does contain enough SiO2 to have coating-like behavior, its durability usually lasts for no more than a year if you’re lucky.

Think about it this way: If someone gave you a Red Bull Vodka that was 50% Red Bull and 50% vodka, you’d be pretty drunk. On the other hand, if someone gave you 99% Red Bull and 1% vodka, you wouldn’t feel any different. But you could still say it’s a Red Bull Vodka. The same concept applies to ceramic products.
Now I’m not saying this to bash on ceramic waxes. I have my fair share of ceramic wax products that I tend to use occasionally on basic or mid-level services. But if you’ve paid almost $1,000 for a “ceramic coating” and notice the ceramic properties fading, something is wrong and I see this happening almost too often.
